Child Therapy Services

A Child’s Mental Health Is Critical To Their Well-Being

Unfortunately, mental health disorders don’t discriminate by age. For the younger population, mental health care can be a challenge. The treatments and strategies that work for adults may not work as well with children.

Child therapy services focuses on providing our youngest patients with the ability to manage their illness effectively to reach their full potential. We also help children to develop the necessary skills to manage their illness in a way that they can further understand when they are older. At Dean Aman LPCMH, we offer talk therapy for children 5 and above.

More Children Need Our Help

Children’s anxiety and depression can start at a young age. The family environment can play a significant impact on a child’s mental health. When we see child patients, we often teach the parent or guardian the same coping techniques so they can help their children. Parents need to fully understand the range of options to best serve their children.

Children suffer from many of the same mental disorders that adults do. Below are a few of the most common.

Anxiety

Children are susceptible to worry about future or past events. They may have anxiety about social acceptance or family issues. They can also worry about the school or family demands that are imposed upon them.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an anxiety disorder that can manifest at a young age. It’s characterized by obsessive thoughts that sometimes result in compulsive behaviors.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

This is a common diagnosis with school-age children. Inattention, and inability to focus may be symptoms of ADD. The symptoms for this can manifest in children that are as young as preschool-aged.

Autism

While this is a neurological disorder, there are many implications for mental health. A child with autism may largely keep to themselves and significantly lack social awareness. This is when play and talk therapy can be beneficial.

What Child Therapy Might Look Like

At Dean Aman LPCMH, we recognize that each child may have different needs and respond to a different approach. For instance, our experienced psychologists may implement a play therapy approach. This is a strategy designed to help children express themselves in healthier ways and discover new ways to solve problems.

Other forms of therapy might include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Client-Centered Therapy
  • Individual Therapy
  • Family Therapy
